Antiprogestins

Antiprogestins reduce both estrogen and progesterone receptors. Gestrinone is the standard agent, and may be comparable to GnRH agonists in reducing pain plus result in fewer menopausal symptoms. Mifepristone, is also a antiprogestin. In a six-month study, mifepristone improved symptoms and reduced endometrial implants without causing menopausal side effects. Caution, however, this product is known as the "abortion pill" and can induce a miscarriage because its antiprogestin effects.
Effects:
• Gestrinone includes male hormone symptoms, to include acne, and possibly the development of high cholesterol levels.

Oral Contraceptives

• Generally directed toward stabilizing the production of hormones (estrogen and progesterone to stimulate endometrial growth. It has been found that fluctuating levels of estrogen and progestin stimulate the growth of endometriosis. Prevents the release of the egg from the ovary (ovulation). Decreases the amount of blood loss during the menstrual period. Decreases backward menstrual period flow into the fallopian tubes and out into the abdominal cavity (retrograde menstruation). Stops menstrual periods for long periods of time when taken over time. Some examples are: estrogen/progestin combination pills (birth control pills) (Brevicon, Demulen, Levlen, Levora, Lo/Ovral, Modicon, Nelova, Nelova 10/11, Nordette, Norethin 1/35E, Norethin 1/50M, Norinyl, Ortho-Novum, Ovcon, Tri-Levlen, Tri-Norinyl, Triphasil) progestin-only pills (Micronor, Nor-Q.D., Ovrette)
Effects:

• Painful periods (dysmenorrhea) usually will return if oral contraceptives are stopped.
• The risk of serious side effects is increased in Menstrual periods usually are less painful with lighter flows.
• Young women with very painful menstrual periods and minimal to mild endometriosis have reported improvement using a continuous 15-week birth control pill regimen program.
• Continuous treatment can be used for up to 1 year.
Caution: Oral contraceptives are not recommended if one has uncontrolled high blood pressure, liver disease, history of blood clots in a vein (deep vein thrombosis) or lung (pulmonary embolus), history of stroke nor if you are over the age of 35 with Diabetes or if you smoke.
